Whenever we pray the “Lord’s Prayer” or “Our Father,” the only prayer that Jesus himself has taught us, we come across this line. Bread was a staple food in Jesus’ times and today we still speak of the “breadwinner” in the family. Note that Jesus says: “Give us today our daily bread.” He does not say, “Give me my daily bread.” The pronoun “our” is an obligation, a responsibility. It reminds us to pray for food for the whole family of God, including our brothers and sisters in poverty.
God has given us extra resources not to hoard or to spend frivolously, but to provide for others in need, especially our brothers and sisters in Christ. Use this time to evaluate how you can use your extras to provide food and education and other basic needs to our mission partners.
Heavenly Father, you have given us enough resources for everyone, but it is our task to distribute them fairly. Help me to be generous and to grow as a giver. Give me the courage to support our missions work and make an impact in Delran and Riverside, and around the world.
