Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care. Isaiah 40:11
The shepherd is often mentioned in the Bible and conveys the image of an intimate and deep relationship between the shepherd and his flock. Pope Francis urges his bishops and priests “to be shepherds with the smell of sheep” and to reach out to those who live “in the peripheries of existence.” A good shepherd knows all of his sheep by name and they come when he calls them.
Use this season to think about the sheep around you who live in the peripheries of existence. Be prepared to meet them, give them comfort, and be generous to them, just like our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ.
Father, allow me to share in the spirit of the Good Shepherd. Give me the compassion to give and reach out to those who live in the peripheries of existence.
