Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, which consisted of men, women and those children old enough to understand.
Nehemiah 8:2
The book of Nehemiah tells an incredible story. He requests and receives permission from the king of Persia to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild the walls around the city, which had been broken down. A city without walls in that time was considered a disgrace and left it open to attack and invasion. Nehemiah overcomes many obstacles to rebuild the walls around the city of Jerusalem in just over two months.
The passage of Scripture above takes place after the walls had been rebuilt. The victory re energized the faith of the people so they were eager to hear God’s word. The priest Ezra reads God’s law and word so they will come to a better understanding of God.
God wants us to understand him. He wants us to understand his values. The better we understand God, the less chance unexpected problems in life will drive us away from him. Pray today for understanding of who God is and what he values.
