“It will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one – to each according to his ability.” Then he went away.
Matthew 25:14
Jesus tells parables to bring us into spiritual realities. These are realities that God sees but are obscured for us. Here, Jesus tells the story of a wealthy man who was going on a long journey. Right before he left, called in his servants and handed them a great deal of money, although not everyone received equal amounts.
Here’s what Jesus wants to know about our situation. Like the servants in the parable, God has given each of us some money. He has not distributed equally, but God has trusted each of us with some money and possessions. The money though is not ours. God is the master and owner of the money. The money in our hands is only for a little while. What we have is on loan for God for 70, 80, or 90 years and then it goes to someone else.
Pray today for the grace to remember you are a steward and not an owner of your possessions. Thank God that he entrusts you to steward his money.
