We are in the fifth week of our series Staying Power. Today we are looking at the step of serving in ministry or missions.
John Ortberg writes, “By coming as a servant, Jesus was not disguising who God is, but revealing who God is.”
In Greek myths Zeus and Hermes disguise themselves as slaves in order to get a true measure of the people’s loyalty to them. The gods don their disguises, conduct their research, and after finding out what they need to know, they throw off their disguises and reveal themselves as gods.
But when God becomes human in Christ Jesus, servanthood is not a disguise, it is a revelation of truth: God is a servant. When you serve, then, you become more like God. In fact, in order to become more like God, in order to grow as a disciple of Jesus, you must serve. Growing spiritually into the person that God wants you to be, means that you must reveal who God is to others by serving them. Where can you serve? Everywhere.
Today, pray for insight to see the ways in which you are already serving. Maybe you are a soccer coach, or the leader of a special project team at work, or the person that all of your friends call when they are distraught. Pray that God will reveal himself to others through your service the same way he revealed himself through Jesus’ life as a servant.
