Jesus went up to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God. When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Luke 6:12-16
Luke tells us that before Jesus chose the twelve apostles, he went up to a mountain to pray. He spent all night in prayer. After consulting with his heavenly Father, he chose the twelve apostles.
Jesus had to make a big decision in choosing the apostles. These were the leaders to whom he would give the mission of the Church to go and make disciples. These were the men in whom he would invest three years of his life — morning, noon, and night. He traveled with them, taught with them, and shared his life with them. But before he chose them, he made prayer a priority. Then he put into practice what he discovered in prayer.
