Jesus said, “And some seed fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture...And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy, but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.”
Luke 8:6, 13
Continuing with the parable of the sower, Jesus outlines the different ways people respond to spiritual growth. He says that some seed fell on the rock. He refers to seed that would have gone through the top soil, but underneath was limestone that prevented the seed from sinking deep roots. Jesus says that this seed represents people who give up on a spiritual practice as soon as it is tested by temptation.
Our commitment to a spiritual practice will be tested. If the desire to grow does not sink deep into our hearts along with a strong desire to continue, we will quit and give up. To stay committed to a practice, we need some reasons deep in our heart that help us remain committed.
