“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
Matthew 28:18-19
Jesus tells the apostles to baptize in the name (singular) of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. There is one God, one name, but three divine persons in the Trinity. Jesus gives us the name of each person of the Trinity so that we can better relate to God. We are not to simply relate to God in some ambiguous or ethereal way; instead, Jesus gives us the name for each person of the Trinity. We are invited into an intimate relationship with God and that begins at baptism.
Knowing someone’s name deepens our connection with them. The sweetest sound to anyone is the sound of their own name. Pray today for your neighborhood. Pray that you would come to know people by their name. Pray today for the neighbors whose names you know.
