So Moses took the staff from its place before the Lord as he was ordered. Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly in front of the rock, where he said to them, “Just listen, you rebels! Are we to produce water for you out of this rock?” Then raising his hand Moses struck the rock twice with his staff, and water came out in abundance, and the community and their livestock drank.
Numbers 20:9-11
Moses takes his staff as God had ordered but then he deviates. He criticizes the people and calls them rebels. And then, rather than commanding the rock to give water, he strikes it instead. Moses allows his anger and his pride to get in the way of his obedience to God.
Moses reminds us that we must continually check our heart. If our heart is not in a good place, if we are dealing with issues of anger or jealousy or pride, it becomes incredibly difficult to follow God’s will.
Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Ask the spirit to help you to cleanse you of these sins in your heart.
