“All that the Lord has spoken we will do and we will be obedient.” And Moses took the blood and threw it upon the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you in the accordance with all these words.”
Exodus 24:7-8
God shares with the people of Israel his desire that they would be his people. He will bless Israel so that other nations will come to know that the God of Israel is the one true God. In return, God asks that they follow his commandments, which include not worshipping other gods. The people respond willingly and then the agreement or covenant is sealed with as the blood from oxen is thrown on the people.
In that culture, this ceremony sealed a solemn oath. The blood symbolized a close family bond. The blood also served as a warning. The Israelites were saying that their blood should be shed if they disobeyed God’s commands.
God gives us commands in the context of a family relationship. His commands bring promises of blessing. Thank God today for the offer to live in relationship with him.
