The next day Moses sat to judge the people and the people stood before Moses from morning till evening. When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said,
“What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand about you from morning until evening?”
Moses responded, “The people come to me to consult God. Whenever they have a disagreement, they come to me to have me settle the matter between them and make known to them God’s statutes and directions.”
Exodus 18:13-15
Jethro sees Moses working all day and night as crowds of people come to him. When Jethro asks Moses about the scene, Moses tells him that he is just doing his job and taking care of his responsibility as a leader of the people. He is making decisions about their problems and settling disputes among the people. He assumes that if he is in charge, he has to solve all the problems.
Like Moses, we can assume an attitude, “if it is going to be it is up to me.” We can fall into a habit of just taking on more and more responsibility or adding more and more to our plate. The summer is a good time to evaluate our schedules and responsibilities and see if there is anything we should stop doing altogether or delegate to someone else.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you search your heart and soul. Have you come to believe that you must take on more tasks and responsibilities? Ask for wisdom to know what you should stop doing.
