Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members of one another.
Ephesians 4:25
Paul writes to the Ephesians and tells them how to live in Christian community. He is writing about how to have a healthy community. Paul writes that we are to put away all falsehood. Falsehood includes lying but it means more than that. It includes being fake or inauthentic.
Paul goes on to say we are to speak the truth to other members of the Church. We are to be honest with others even when the truth is painful. The reason we are honest and speak hard truths is because we belong to one another. We are connected to one another. If we are being false or untruthful to others, we are in a sense lying to ourselves.
Speaking the truth can be incredibly difficult. Pray today for the grace to speak the truth to your close friends in faith. Pray that honesty would characterize all of your relationships.
