Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying.
Luke 9:32-33
Peter didn’t know what he was talking about, but that never stopped Peter from speaking. Apparently saying nothing wasn’t an option for him. Peter suggests just staying up on the mountain and living there. God gives us mountain-top experiences to fuel us but we cannot live there.
Jesus hadn’t brought Peter, James, and John up the mountain so they could stay there. He brought them up the mountain because they were his close friends and confidants. He shared more of his life with them than with anyone else. He wants them to know something about him that no one else knows. Jesus had to carry this burden of his identity as the Son of God and Savior of the world all on his own.
We all have burdens or facts about our lives that the world at large does not know. That is healthy, but we need a few people who know what is beneath the surface. We need two or three friends in faith who know us inside and out.
Who are the people who really know you? Thank God for them today. If you can’t name anyone, ask God to send those people into your life.
