Jesus told his disciples a parable, “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to his teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.”
Luke 6:39-40
This passage from Luke is taken from the Sermon on the Plain. Jesus asks a rhetorical question and then answers it. If a blind person leads a blind person, then both will fall into a pit. He continues this train of thought. Each of us will follow someone. We will look to someone to teach us how to live. And we will become most like the person we follow and who teaches us about life.
We are all disciples of someone. We all look to someone to show us the meaning and purpose of life. It makes sense to turn to Jesus, the author of life, as our teacher. In comparison to Jesus, other teachers are blind. They cannot see with the insight of the Son of God. Jesus has the authority to lead us to a life of meaning and purpose.
Throughout this lenten series, ask Jesus to help you see clearly why he has put you on this earth and how to live according to his purposes for you.
