Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah,” which is translated Christ. They brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Kepha,” which is translated Peter.
John 1:40-42
Andrew brings his brother Simon to meet Jesus because he believes that he is the Messiah. When Jesus sees Simon he gives him a new name. He calls him “Kepha,” which means huge rock. Jesus identifies Peter as the rock, the solid foundation of the Church.
Like Peter, Jesus has a name for us. He sees something in us that we might not see in ourselves. Only Jesus can give us our name because we belong to him. He purchases us with the price of his blood on the cross.
Thank Jesus today that he alone can give you your name. Ask him what name he wants to give you.
