This is the testimony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to him to ask him, “Who are you?” He admitted and did not deny it, but admitted, “I am not the Christ.”
So they asked him, “What are you then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” John answered, “No.”
So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us?” John said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
John 1:19-23
John the Baptist drew crowds of people even though he preached away from the religious center of Jerusalem. The religious leaders sent emissaries to find out who John was and whether he might think he was the Messiah. John says he is not the Messiah, he is not Elijah, and he is not the prophet. Finally, the representatives of the religious leaders ask John to describe who he is. John references a verse from Isaiah, which describes how he sees himself and his mission.
In the year 2022 and in the years ahead, God has a mission for you: something he wants to do through you that he will not do through another. Thank God today that he has a mission for you. Ask God to help show you that mission as well. You may even want to pray for him to give you a verse from Scripture that describes your identity and mission just as he did with John the Baptist.
