When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does it happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
Luke 1:41-43
Mary goes to visit Elizabeth and serve her in her pregnancy. Elizabeth responds with gratitude for her visit. She asks, “How does it happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” She is humbled that Mary would give of her time to be with her.
Humility precedes gratitude. While entitlement prevents us from recognizing our blessings, humility opens our eyes to see our gifts. When we do not think so much of ourselves that we deserve a gift, but rather are humbled that others would even think of us, gratitude follows.
Read the words of Elizabeth again. Repeat those words in prayer. How does it happen that God sent his Son into the world for me? How does it happen that God thinks so much of me that he sent his Son to die for me?
