And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” “Whoever has two tunics should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.”
Luke 3:10-1
The crowds of people respond positively to John the Baptist. They want to produce good works as a sign of repentance. They want to prepare the way for the Messiah so they can recognize him. So, they ask a simple question, “What should we do?” John tells them to give away their extra. To share.
At this time of the year, we are predisposed to giving and sharing our extra. If you are reading this, you probably have plenty of extra: extra food, extra clothes, extra money in the bank that you don’t absolutely need. God wants us to recognize our extra not so that we feel guilty but so that we feel grateful. Then, out of gratitude to him, we share our resources with people who have little or none.
Thank God today for the extra you have been given. Thank God throughout the day whenever you see all the clothes in your closet, food in your fridge, or water flowing freely from the tap.
