Sometime afterward, God put Abraham to the test and said to him: Abraham!“Ready, he replied.” Then God said: Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There offer him up as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you.
Genesis 22:1-2
Abraham goes through many trials and tribulations. He trusts and obeys God…sort of. Throughout his life, we see that Abraham partners with God, but often holds back. In other words, he is just like us.
Eventually, God gives Abraham a son. If God is going to use Abraham to be a source of his blessing, then he must have total trust from him. And this is one reason he makes this startling request. God tells Abraham to take his son and offer him back to God. God needs Abraham to come to the place where he totally and completely trusts God.
While God wants to give us the desires of our heart, we need to make sacrifices so that what we want does not become more important to us than God. We need to make sacrifices so that our desires do not become our gods.
Is there something God is asking you to sacrifice so that you place your trust in him? Pray today for the grace to love and trust God more than what you want in life.
