God remembered Noah and all the animals, wild and tame, that were with him in the ark. So God made a wind sweep over the earth, and the waters began to subside. The fountains of the abyss and the flood gates of the sky were closed, and the downpour from the sky was held back. Gradually the waters receded from the earth. At the end of one hundred and fifty days, the waters had so diminished, that in the seventh month, on the seventh day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.
Genesis 8:1-4 Genesis tells us that God remembered Noah. This does not mean God had forgotten him, but that God determines it is time to act on Noah’s behalf. God stops the rains and the down pour so that the ark comes to rest. Noah is called to now called to rebuild God’s family.
The verses above harken back to the original creation. The new world emerges from the chaotic waters of “the deep.” There is also a theme of the importance of rest. Noah’s name means “rest or relief.” And the ark “rests” on the mountain. Living in relationship with God allows us to rest in him. In fact, it is the only way we can rest at all.
God provides rest because then we know we are not all on our owns to make life work. Tell God today that you want to enter into his rest for your soul.
