Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves. When they heard the sound of the Lord God walking about in the garden at the breezy time of the day, the man and his wife hid themselves from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
The Lord God called to the man and asked him, “Where are you?” “Who told you that you were naked? You have eaten then, from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat?” The man replied, “The woman whom you put here with me – she gave me fruit from the tree, and so I ate it.”
Genesis 3: 7-12
As a result of eating the forbidden fruit, humanity experiences a three-fold alienation. As a result of sin, we are no longer comfortable in our skin. Before the Fall, Adam and Eve walked around naked, now they have become aware of their own vulnerability and frailty.
Before the Fall, humanity had an easy-going relationship with God. God would come around in the cool of the evening, the relaxed part of the day. As a result of sin, human beings feel like they have to run from God because we never want to be around someone we have sinned against.
Before the Fall, human beings were in perfect relationship with one another, but now Adam is blaming Eve for his problems. They are fighting with one another.
All the problems in our world flow from this three-fold alienation. The story of salvation history are God’s efforts to bring healing and grace to this broken world. In his kingdom, all these relationships will be restored. Our job as Christ followers is to join him in this work.
Pray today to be a conduit of God’s grace. Ask God to use you to bring healing to our broken world.
