Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. Mark 9:41
In Jesus’ time, offering a drink of water was likely a more complicated act than it is today. And yet, the simplicity and basic kindness of satisfying another’s thirst is something we can all do. Jesus’ point is to tell his followers that all the kindnesses offered to others, no matter how simple, will be seen. They will be rewarded by God.
We can sometimes get sidetracked in our lives by striving to be good enough. Even if we believe we are pursuing godly things and living an honest life, we may not be sure how we measure up. But God is not keeping a scorecard; he is not calculating the biggest sacrifices and granting bigger rewards. Simple acts of kindness make an impact. Acts of love that may be forgotten by man will be remembered by God and rewarded in heaven. They are good enough.
This week, pay attention to those around you. Is there a simple act of kindness that you can offer? Pray for opportunities to show, through a simple act, consideration for others.
