You kill and envy, but you cannot obtain; you fight and wage war. You do not possess because you do not ask.
James 4:2 James is addressing everyday people here, not criminals. And he is using hyperbole. We kill relationships when we allow our disordered passions and our selfishness to drive our behavior. We covet what others have. We never have enough. James tells us very simply why you don’t have enough: You have not, because you ask not. Don’t blame others when you don’t have enough of something — ask God to provide for you what you are lacking. God has promised to give us everything we need in life. We need to trust God, to rely on him alone. We need to know that God wants the best for us, he wants us to have a rich full life. He wants us to turn toward him in our need. As you pray today, ask the Holy Spirit for grace and wisdom. Thank God for the blessings in your life and for always being there for you.
