Jesus stands out uniquely in all of human history. He claimed to be the Son of God. He claimed to be both human and divine. For most people, we would say that if they claimed to be God that they were crazy. And yet no one says that about Jesus. Jesus is the only person in history who claimed to be the Son of God and is also universally regarded as a great sage, as someone who offered insight into life and how it works.
This raises the following questions for us: If Jesus really is the Son of God, if he really is the Lord, then is he my Lord. Do I believe he provides a way for me to live a successful life? Do I believe that Jesus is enough?
To follow Jesus is not a passive spectator sport. It is active. To follow Jesus means to go where he goes, even when that means going to the cross. That sounds difficult and challenging, and it is — but it is better than the alternative of worrying about making life work out on our own, and it is better than constantly feeling that we are not enough.
In your prayers today, say to Jesus, “Jesus, I want to follow you. Show me what it means to follow you. Help me to see where you are leading me. Help me to know that you are enough.”
