Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Phillipi. Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”
Mark 8:27
Jesus once again goes on a journey. He is moving. Jesus wants to take us on a journey and lead us through life. This was such a ubiquitous theme that the early followers of Jesus did not call themselves Christians, but rather described themselves as people of “The Way.” They believed that Jesus provided the way to a successful life.
In the above passage, Jesus boldly puts this question to the apostles: “What are the crowds saying about me?” He was such a fascinating person that people could not help talking about him, discussing his miracles and teachings. And, in this question, there is a tension. The apostles must acknowledge their own questions about Jesus’ identity. It’s a significant moment; people today still question who Jesus is or was.
As followers of Jesus, we answer this question by stepping away from the distractions in our lives and letting him be our focus. This week, every time the spirit of enough weighs on you or creeps up on you, instead of trying to figure out how to do enough or be enough for that area of your life, ask Jesus for guidance. He alone is enough.
