And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. Mark 7:36
In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus appears at times to be a mysterious and lonely figure. He is traveling around, followed by his disciples and people who are clamoring for any piece of him that they can get. He demonstrates both power and compassion when teaching and performing miracles but seems always to be looking for somewhere to rest. In the passage above, he requests that the witnesses keep the miracle quiet. But, of course, that does not happen.
God wants to speak to us. He wants to communicate directly with us, but often this communication is muffled by our noisy world and our fallen human nature. As with the deaf man, Jesus wants to get us away from the crowd to meet our needs. He wants to restore and heal our hearts. For that to happen, we need to get away from the demands and noise of this life to meet God in the quiet.
Today, find a quiet place where you can talk to God about your burdens and the demands of your life. Share with God where you struggle with the question of “enough.”
