He put his finger into the man’s ears and spitting touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” – that is, “Be opened!” Mark 7:34
In most of Jesus’ miracles, he performs healings in full public view. But the actions performed during the commission of this miracle are unique. Jesus takes the man aside, touches the man’s ears and tongue, and then groans a command – “be opened.” And it all sounds very dramatic. Every detail is shared here to give us insight into the person of Jesus, who recognizes the unique needs of every person. This man was deaf and mute and needed physical touch to understand what Jesus was doing for him.
Just as Jesus communicated to the deaf man in a way unique to him, Jesus wants to communicate his love for us in ways that we can understand. Jesus has a message for you today. He wants to communicate to you in a way that you can hear, but you need to be open to hearing from him.
Ask God to open your ears and your eyes today. Pray for the grace to see the ways he is speaking to you uniquely and individually – through the words of others, in the events of your life, or in the seemingly random or accidental things that happen to you today.
