But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken.
Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Luke 5:8-11
Simon Peter understands the gap between him and Jesus. He sees the huge catch of fish, and realizes Jesus’ power and authority. He understands that he is not worthy of Jesus and so it fills him with a fear that he should not be around him. Jesus tells him to fear not; from now on, Peter will learn how to bring people into a relationship with him.
Jesus says the same thing to us. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid that you are not good enough to bring others to Christ. Don’t be afraid that you don’t have the answers to all of the tough questions. Don’t be afraid — because if Jesus, who is the master and authority on life, sends you out to fish, you have nothing to fear.
Confess any fears you have about investing in someone and inviting him or her to come to church. Pray for the grace to put those fears behind you.
