As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written:
‘Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare your way before you.
Matthew 11:7-10
Jesus addresses a series of rhetorical questions to the crowds about John the Baptist, lifting him up as a model for mission and discipleship. Jesus tells the crowds that John wasn’t just a prophet; he was the prophet who prepared the way for the Messiah. The crowds were drawn to John’s preaching in the desert because he aroused their spiritual hunger for a Savior.
John serves as a model for all Christians. Like him, our life and lifestyle can point to the person of Jesus Christ and awaken people’s hunger for him. Ask the Spirit to help you spot the ways you can point others to Jesus today.
