When John heard in prison of the works of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to him with this question, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?”
Matthew 11:2-3
Last week, we looked at John the Baptist, a wildly popular figure who was attracting huge crowds. His movement was off to a strong start and he had a great mission. But now his situation has changed. People quickly got behind John, but a lot of people realized that his message was a real challenge to the way things were. Now, we find John in prison. John has been arrested for speaking out against King Herod, who had an illicit relationship with his brother’s wife. John believed he was following God; but instead of being rewarded, he finds himself in prison, facing a likely death sentence.
John’s question is not cynical, but rather very honest, as he is maybe even struggling with doubt about his purpose. Have you ever been totally convinced and sure of an opportunity — all the signs seem to be pointing in the right direction — but the situation doesn’t seem to work out as planned?
Today, pray for faith in an area of your life where you are prone to doubt God’s plan for your life, job, or relationships.
