He said to them in reply, “An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here.
Mt 12:39-41
When the scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus for (another) sign, Jesus refers to Jonah. The three days and nights in the whale’s belly prefigure Jesus’ descent into sheol (the place of the dead) and his resurrection. Many of them still don’t come to believe in Jesus, even after he gives them this incredible sign.
Throughout our lives, God offers moments and signs to draw us closer to him. We must choose to be open to them and accept them rather than run from them. Pray for the grace to see the moments and opportunities God gives you to grow closer to him.
