“At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, ‘Be patient with me and I will pay you back in full.’” Moved with compassion the master of the servant let him go and forgave him the loan.
Matthew 18:26-27
We continue today to look at the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. The servant owed a debt he could not possibly repay to the king. When the king ordered that he be sold, the servant fell on his knees and said something completely ridiculous: He asked the king for time to pay the debt…even though the debt was so large that the servant could not hope to pay it back in one hundred lifetimes.
The king forgave the debt not because he believed it could ever be repaid but because of his own mercy and compassion. He forgave the debt, even though it cost him and not the servant. The debt was canceled with no strings attached. This is grace. Grace does not expect payment. Grace simply cancels the debt.
Thank God today that, like the servant, God has had compassion on you and canceled your debt to him.
