Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times, but seventy times seven. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him ten thousand talents. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property in payment of the debt.
Matthew 18:22-25
Peter asks Jesus if forgiving a person seven times for a sin is enough. Jesus says not seven times but seventy times seven. In other words, we must forgive over and over again. Jesus understands that this is a difficult teaching and that it is not an easy one to accept. Jesus then tells a parable so Peter will get this teaching not just intellectually with his head but also in his heart.
A king was settling accounts and had a servant who owed him ten thousand talents. Since a servant could only earn about two talents in a lifetime, this was a debt that could never be repaid. And so to get back some of his money, the king ordered the servant and his family to be sold as slaves.
Like the servant, we all owe God a debt that is impossible for us to pay. Pray today for the grace to understand how your situation is like that of the servant in the parable.
