He arose and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the entrance of the city, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called out to her, “Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink.” 1Kings 17: 10
The prophet Elijah has been instructed to travel to the town of Zarephath and look for a poor widow, and so he goes. Elijah trusts completely that God will be faithful in his promise to provide for him.
When things are going well for us, we have enough, and our lives seem to be on cruise control, that’s when we are easily persuaded that we are in control of our lives. But sudden misfortune grabs our attention and prompts us to remember God. Whether we are asking for a miracle or blaming him, he has our attention.
Going through life on autopilot does not get us anywhere. Why do we wait for a crisis to pay attention to all the ways God blesses us? Why do we not notice all the ways we can be a blessing to others except when they are in crisis? Pray for God to show you how might help others in big and small ways. Thank God for all the ways he blesses your life every day.
