The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, ‘He is One and there is no other than he.’ And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Mark 12:32-33
Jesus and the scribe are discussing God’s commandments to love…love God, and then love others. Not just the people we like, or when the people in our lives are doing what is expected, but love everyone all the time.
Sometimes being a parent or a boss or even a friend is hard, especially when we are confronted by others’ bad choices or behavior. What would happen if we surrendered our relationships to God and just loved people through their ups and downs?
To be a follower of Jesus is hard, but if that is who we say we are then we need to live by Jesus’s standards of love. Who do you need to turn over to God today? Let go of the compulsion to control the lives of others, instead pray for God’s will to be done.
