As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” Mark 10:46
In this week’s passage, we meet Bartimaeus, a blind man who is begging alongside a busy road. You can likely imagine this scene of Jesus walking with his entourage, and they come upon a lowly figure, sitting on the edge of the road, shouting to be noticed.
How do we try to get noticed? In our culture, we are under a microscope 24 – 7, between friends, family, co-workers, and our social media audience. Crafting this self-image is the ultimate exercise in control. But who are we trying to please with this false identity we have carefully constructed?
Look at your image on your Facebook page…is that the real you? What about the image you try to project at work or school? This week, we will try to define who we are in God’s eyes. Pray for his help as you let go of the lies about who you are supposed to be.
