Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:43b-45
Jesus doesn’t criticize the apostles for wanting to be great and successful. Instead, he redirects their desire away from positions of power and explains that they are to become servant-leaders. Jesus’ entire life was an act of humility and service for us. He gave his life so that we could be free.
The path to true freedom is not by amassing power on earth; rather, we should humble ourselves in service to others. True freedom does not come from controlling every aspect of our lives. Instead, we must surrender ourselves to following Jesus, who gave his life for us.
Today, don’t have any agenda for yourself, but simply serve the people around you. At work, at home, or wherever you happen to be, offer yourself to others in humble service.
