Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized. But to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared. “When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. Mark 10:39b-41
Jesus says that John and James will share in his suffering, but then he doesn’t promise them anything. He also implies that he can’t give them what they want, that it is up to our heavenly Father. Nonetheless, the other apostles are indignant that John and James asked for power first. This creates discord and jealousy for the disciples.
