Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”

Jesus tells the rich man that giving away his money is the true path to eternal life. If he does so, he will have a richer life filled with abundance.  But Jesus knows money is everything to the rich man, who is defined by his wealth — it’s what he loves most in his life.

Our attachment to earthly things is an impediment to our relationship with Jesus. We are called to follow Jesus with our whole hearts, but instead we become distracted by everyday worries and our desire to always be comfortable. But if we trust entirely in him, and make him the center of our lives, then we can gain eternal life.
