“Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
Matthew 26:14-16
After the woman anoints Jesus at Bethany, Judas goes to the chief priests and asks what they will give him for betraying Jesus. They paid him thirty pieces of silver, which was not a great deal of money. It was the amount that would be paid for a slave.
Betrayal hurts because it sacrifices something of great importance — such as friendship, marriage, love of country, or love of God — for money or pleasure or something of very little significance in the grand scheme of things. This is why betrayal hurts so much.
