So Pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
John 18:36-38
While Pilate does not want to get involved with Jesus, he is unable to get away from him. He summons Jesus into the praetorium and questions him. If Jesus has claimed to be a king and a rival to Caesar then Pilate has to punish him to do his job. However, instead of asserting that he is a political king, Jesus becomes philosophical and talks about being a witness to the truth. Pilate asks the question, “What is truth?”
Pilate becomes so fixated on his own situation and own pressures that he is unable to look at the bigger picture. He doesn’t care about the truth of the situation, only about getting out of his responsibility to make a decision about Jesus.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you care more about the truth than your own comfort.
