Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. So Pilate came out to them and said, “What charge do you bring against this man?” They answered and said to him, “If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you. At this, Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according your law.”
John 18:29-31
The Jewish leaders bring Jesus before Pontius Pilate because they want him put to death and Roman law did not give them the power to execute anyone. Pilate realizes something is not quite right when the Jewish leaders won’t name Jesus’ crime; instead, they say they wouldn’t have brought him if he wasn’t a criminal. Sensing a trap, Pilate tries to avoid any responsibility for Jesus.
In life, problems are going to be brought to us. Many times, a spirit can settle in that we don’t feel like dealing with problems, even if they are our responsibility. When just wanting to get rid of a problem drives our thinking and feeling, we set ourselves up for a fall or for making a poor decision.
Ask the Holy Spirit for the strength to overcome sloth or laziness when issues come to your attention that are your responsibility.
