Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you, and: ‘With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus said to him in reply, “It also says, ‘You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.’” When the devil had finished every temptation,he departed from him for a time. Luke 4:9-13
The third temptation is all about manipulation. The devil tempts Jesus to manipulate God and manipulate people. If Jesus throws himself off the tower then he is manipulating his Father to save him and protect him. He would also be manipulating people. Rather than leading people to true faith and belief in him, he would be doing something spectacular simply to impress them.
The devil will also tempt us to manipulate God and others rather than love them. We are tempted all the time to try and get things from God or people. We are tempted to control God and people rather than live in relationship with them. When we spot this manipulation from others, we hate it. It makes us feel used, but if not careful we can fall into the same trap. The goal of our life is not to get God or people to do what we want but to love them.
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you ways you are tempted to manipulate others to get what you want. Repent of manipulation and ask God for the grace to simply love him and others.
