This week we begin our message series looking at some of the villains we find in Scripture. In every story, the hero must face a villain to come to a happy ending or get to a better place. The Scriptures show that we too we will be opposed by villains. They will work to stop us from loving God and loving others.
This week we will look at the ultimate villain: the devil. Some people find the existence of the devil hard to believe. However, the Gospels clearly show that Jesus believed in the devil and that he faced him as an adversary throughout his life. It also just makes sense that there is a personality behind all the evil in the world. Evil is not random, it is often calculated by someone. That someone is the devil.
As Christians we can make two mistakes with the devil. The first is the one common to our age – to ignore him and act as if he doesn’t exist – not take him seriously. The second mistake is to make too much of the devil. Although he is a formidable adversary, his power is nothing compared to God.
